In order to promote an inclusive faculty search process, we have created a Faculty Search Handbook, which provides guidelines on conducting faculty searches.

Annual review process for faculty

In order to ensure an inclusive review process, we have created guidelines for the Annual Review Process for Faculty.

Faculty workshops

The Dean’s Office holds regular faculty lunches and workshops in order to build community and engage with faculty (especially junior faculty) on key issues pertaining to their advancement. Read about the tenure-track lunch program and learn more about our faculty leadership training program.

National Science Foundation broader impact statement guidance

This document provides Principal Investigators (PIs) with guidance on crafting an effective Broader Impacts (BI) Statement in their grant proposals, as required by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Mentorship evaluation

In 2023, the Dean’s Office launched a pilot program on mentorship evaluation with participation from all departments.

Professional development support

The Dean’s Office offers all School of Science faculty, postdocs, graduate students, and administrators membership to the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity (NCFDD).

Awards and fellowships

DEI Service fellowship

The School of Science is pleased to offer DEI Service fellowships for graduate students. These fellowships provide financial support for one semester to recognize the extraordinary service contributions of graduate students in support of their community. Apply here.

Dean of Science fellowships

In collaboration with the Vice Chancellor’s Office and the Office of Graduate Education, the School of Science offers the Dean of Science fellowships. These three-year fellowships honor and recognize academic excellence among newly entering graduate students.

Quality of Life grants

Departmental DEI grants

Each department in our school is awarded DEI annual grants by the Dean’s Office, to enable and support departmental DEI programming and activities.

Outreach and community programs

The School of Science leads and participates in outreach and community programs to increase the diversity at MIT and in the STEM pipeline. Since 2021, the School of Science has supported important recruitment and retention programs such as attendance at the annual SACNAS conference and the Navajo Math Circles program.
