Picower Institute for Learning & Memory

The Picower Institute for Learning and Memory is an independent research entity within MIT's School of Science. Faculty members hold academic appointments in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences and the Department of Biology, and other scholars at all levels, from undergraduate students to postdocs, take advantage of the Institute’s many research opportunities. Picower’s diverse array of brain scientists are dedicated to unraveling the mechanisms that drive the quintessentially human capacities to remember and learn, as well as to explore related functions like perception, attention, and consciousness. Research ranges from explorations of the most basic biological interactions of genes and proteins to in-depth examinations of cellular and systemic mechanisms. This comprehensive approach places Picower Institute researchers in the perfect position to study the mechanisms behind developmental disorders such as autism, psychiatric illnesses such as schizophrenia, and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease—conditions that affect millions worldwide.
