The Center for Biomedical Engineering integrates engineering and molecular and cellular biology to develop new approaches to biomedical technology, as well as providing an outstanding interdisciplinary environment for training a new generation of leaders and researchers in bioengineering.  CBE has played a leading role in the evolution of MIT’s activities in tissue engineering at a historical moment when innovative approaches are needed to facilitate the translation of rapid new advances in research into the biomedical and health care sectors.  Fundamental discoveries in mechanobiology by CBE faculty and students have enabled important new technologies for musculoskeletal and cardiovascular tissue repair and regeneration.  New initiatives focus on the structure and function of biomembrane proteins for applications in sensors.
